Description: Magnificent Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian custom made
cabinet. It has a burled gallery on the very top. The top has a drawer on
the right side and a fake drawer front on the left that pivots (see photo).
When the two large middle doors are opened a gorgeous and intriguing
interior is revealed. In the middle is a pullout drawer with incised
carved front that opens to display a desk. The desk has the original red
felt surface (some stains) and five small drawers with birdseye front.
There are also two totally hidden secret drawers that are spring loaded and
open into the back of the cubby in the middle of the interior. These
drawers are released by pushing on the thin birdseye maple strips that are
on the outer edges of the interior - an ingenious and, in our experience,
unique feature! There are four felt covered shelves above and five below
the desk section that pull out providing a wonderful display - work surface.
A burled panel on each side of each shelf is attached to the shelf and comes
out with it. When all the shelves are recessed this give the appearance of
a solid burled strip coming down on each side. There is a large drawer with
carved center in the middle of the base. Each side has a curved door and
bottom drawer with inset burled panels. There are two shelves in each side
cabinet. Notice the book matched burl walnut veneer on each side of the
cabinet where the veneer on each side is a mirror image of that on the
corresponding side. This huge piece was very likely made by Herter
Brothers, NYC. It has unsurpassed quality and construction. It was
certainly custom made for an architect, industrial designer, artist or
draftsman. Furthermore, the condition of the felt and wood suggests that
is was seldom used over the years. A most unique and exceptional piece!
