Description: Great quality and style solid quartered oak grandfather clock
made by Walter Durfee, Providence, R.I. It is a slight variation of the
pattern number 18 clock pictured on page 151 of "Longcase Clocks and Standing
Regulators" by Tran Duy Ly. This one has rope twist columns rather than
fluted columns on the sides. It also has three fancier carved finials on
the top. The rest of the details of the case match the one pictured. The
case features intricately carved details and moldings, raised panels on the
base and sides and intricately carved front feet. It has a beveled glass in
the hood door and case door. The hinges are the fancy cast brass ones that
were used on the Durfee clocks (see photo). The movement is signed Durfee
on several places of the moon dial as well as the back plate (see photos).
Each of the nine tubes are also signed. The clock was retailed by Bailey,
Banks & Biddle Co, Philadelphia. They were the Tiffany's of that city. It
can be changed from playing either "chimes on eight bells" or "Westminster
Chimes" on the quarter hour, half hour, three quarter and hour. It strikes
the hours as well. This clock is in great untouched condition. The
movement as shown has not been cleaned but we would have it all cleaned and
serviced when sold. The face has the old silver, as some customers prefer.
If you wished to have it re-silvered we could have that done at an extra
charge. A wonderful stylish clock by the premier maker of the period!
