Description: Phenomenal Renaissance Revival Walnut Victorian Centennial
presentation tall clock. This extraordinary clock has a large 19" silver
dial with the inscription "J.B. 1876." We believe this clock was made for
the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition and was likely displayed in one of
the convention halls at the time. It has a pin wheel jewelers movement made by George Jones
from upstate New York. His movements are considered the finest of the
period. It has a replacement sweep second hand, ordered
after the photos were taken. There is a single weight and a three vial
pendulum. The mercury has been removed from the vials for safety. The
monumental 140" case is truly spectacular. It has a carved crest with a
three dimensional carved bust - probably of William Shakespeare - perched on
a hooded plinth. A ring of little wooden balls encircle the dial. The
entire case is decorated with numerous finials, carvings (including some
faces) fluted and full burled columns, incised burled panels, carved knobs
and rosettes, and extensive burl. The sides and door of the case have an
original cut/etched glass. A burled panel enhances the interior of the
case. This magnificent rare Centennial clock is one of the BEST pieces of
furniture we have ever offered for sale!
